It should be noted that when it was built in 1974, the now-insignificant NCNB Plaza was the tallest building in North Carolina. It remained so until 1988 when the First Union Building was built. The tallest figure, the NationsBank Tower (The Taj McColl), was completed in 1992 and remains the state’s tallest skyscraper, and the tallest building between Philadelphia and Atlanta.
